GOING to Mezze in Holmfirth is definitely a learning curve as you are guaranteed a thorough culinary tour around the Med to choose your dishes.

Walk into this cosy compact little restaurant opened in Holmfirth just over 12 months ago and you’ll be handed a very different sort of menu to the norm.

Mezze operates a Mediterranean inspired menu of small individual dishes featuring tastes of Greece, Turkey, Italy, Cyprus and the Middle East.

Diners are advised to chose about three small dishes each and enjoy tastes from around the Med. There’s also an option of a Mezze selection at £14.95 per head.

The chef has worked in Greece and the owner lived in Crete for seven years. Obviously this means they have an extensive knowledge of the area’s cuisine.

In its first year Mezze has established itself as one of the town’s favourite eating spots and even when we visited on a rainy Tuesday evening it was pretty busy and filled up quickly.

Although it’s only a small restaurant filled with rustic style tables or tall chairs, Mezze oozes with atmosphere. There is an upstairs eating area with extra tables for busy times.

When the menu arrived we were initially a little concerned about what to order. However, we quickly got the hang of it and made our choices. Opting for a couple of dips to start with, we ordered a bowl of the Greek favourite hummus and Skordalia, a Greek sauce made with garlic. Dipping our tortilla chips in the hummus and very strong garlic sauce, we couldn’t help but think we would be popular in the morning with garlic breath!

However, moving on, we ordered a further nine small dishes between us which included a bowl of marinated olives, Kritharaki (rice shaped pasta with mushroom and rocket), Greek meatballs in a spicy tomato sauce, Shawarma (lightly spiced fried beef, pitta and yoghurt), Merguez sausage, Kleftiko (oven baked spring lamb with lemon and oregano), Lahmuklan (Turkish flatbread pizza) lightly battered cod with Skordalia and a Greek salad.

Everything was delicious, especially the Kritharaki pasta and the Kleftiko. If you enjoy spicy food, then chose the Lahmuklan flatbread pizza which was tasty, but very hot.

Eating at a place like Mezze is a great opportunity to sample unfamiliar tastes and get to know more about regional cuisine. Looking back at the night, my own particular favourites were hummus, the fish dish and the spicy meatballs.

Sounds a lot I know, but they are only small dishes. However the three of us polished off the lot between us and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Familiar dishes like Greek salad, meatballs and olives are always a delight but it was an experience to sample new tastes and discover more about the Greek and Turkish cultural favourites.

To finish off our meal we decided to order a couple of puddings and chose baked banana cheesecake and a chocolate pot to share. A bit indulgent, I know, but hey, you only live once!

Mezze is a delight and an unusual dining experience. The only thing I would say is be careful ordering small dishes which cost £3 or £4 as they can add up and bump up your bill.

However, saying that our bill of £70.50 was for three people and did include two glasses of white wine and two ciders along with two puddings.

Mezze is sure to guarantee a good night out with relaxed dining and a great atmosphere.

Remember you can’t book unless there are six or more of you so get there early!
