WOULD YOU GO BACK? Definitely – and one of us is already a regular.

ONE of my colleagues kept waxing lyrical about Salvia, a cosy little Italian restaurant just this side of Mirfield.

She is a regular visitor and is always recommending it, and in particular always enjoys the steak! So with this in mind four of us, including the aforesaid colleague, decided to give a try.

For a Tuesday evening, it was surprisingly busy and customers just kept arriving all the time. Luckily we had been sensible and booked our table which was just as well, seeing how full it was.

Salvia Restaurant is situated on the way into Mirfield, tucked away alongside a selection of shops but with plenty of car parking. From the outside it is quite tiny and could easily be missed. However, judging from the many diners already enjoying their food, many people have already spotted it and decided to try Salvia.

After we sat down at our table, our waiter immediately sprang into action to remedy a potential problem.

Although we should never complain about the sun in our weather-obsessed country, it is annoying when it’s peeping through the window and is straight in someone’s eyes.

Our diplomatic and attentive waiter quickly manoeuvred the blind to remedy the situation.

After ordering our drinks, we studied the menu which included all the usual Italian favourites along with a great selection of specials, both included in the normal menu and on the blackboard.

Choosing our starters, we knew we would be oozing with garlic and wouldn’t be popular the day after – but we till opted for two servings of garlic mushrooms and one garlic tomato pizza bread.

The only one among us who wouldn’t reek of garlic chose prawns served with a salad and dressing, a more contemporary version of a traditional prawn cocktail.

So what should we choose for main course? From the specials menu I chose Pollo Crema, a delicious mix of tender chicken breast served with a rich sauce of mushrooms and cream which came with a selection of vegetables and some new potatoes. Our steak fan actually changed her normal choice and chose Calzone, a folded pizza traditionally filled with Mozzarella cheese and a variety of other stuffings.

Traditionally Calzone pizza is on the large side and this one certainly lived up to expectations but was soon demolished.

Another of our number however opted for the special sirloin served with thin chips which was huge and described as “gorgeous’’, while the other one went for the very filling King Prawn pasta from the extensive selection of pasta dishes.

So after we polished off all our main courses, the next big question of course was: could we accommodate puddings?

Yes we could – and opted for one egg custard and vanilla creme bruleé and two lots of profiteroles (two of us decided to share). Gorgeous, yummy, mmm ...

There’s one thing for sure, Salvia’s does some great puddings.

All in all, a very enjoyable evening in a delightful little restaurant which is just waiting to be discovered. Our colleague was back at Salvia just a few nights later for birthday celebrations with a large group of friends and yes, she enjoyed it very much once more tucking in to deep fried Brie, her favourite of fillet steak and a special birthday pudding for all to share.
