Andrew Carden, of Mirfield, is pictured being raised aloft by his friends at a bring and buy sale he held at his home to raise the money. About 35 people of all ages attended the event, at which Andrew was helped by his younger sister Claire, 7, and their friend David Stevens, 13. A pupil at Battyeford Middle School, Andrew has organised several fund-raising events for the charity. This time the cash will go towards specially equipped Land Rovers to serve as mobile eye clinics in Malawi. 6th December 1986.8 of 34All dressed up for their party are these children at the town centre Polish Catholic Centre. The event organised by the Polish School Parents Committee based at the centre, was attended by about 55 children. 8th December 1986.9 of 34Asian pop music and traditional clog dancing were among attractions at an International Evening at Deighton High School. Organiser Deepshikha Jalpota (left), who teaches English and drama at the school and also runs a special Asian women's group, is pictured with members of the Asian pop group, Naya Saaz, of Bradford, and children from Mount Joy School, Huddersfield, who presented excepts from the musical, Oliver. Asian food was provided, and the clog dancing demonstration was given by the school's youth tutor Miss Anita Carr. The juniors are presenting a Nativity story with drama, music and choral speaking for parents tonight. Tomorrow afternoon the event will be presented again for parents, and the infants will also show their music and drama production of a Christmas story. 8th December 1986.11 of 34Berry Brow Infant and Nursery School found there was a doctor in the house when they performed a nativity play with a difference. The play features a Dr Who-style character in a modern day version of the nativity tale which sees the good doctor and his Tardis visiting the school. Every pupil took part in the play - some 150 children - and put on two performances to over 200 parents. Many of those attending the monthly tea club used to go to the building in Taylor Hill Road when it was the former Methodist Chapel. Mince pies, glasses of sherry and fruit helped create a festive occasion for about a dozen senior citizens, who each received special gifts. About six teas were taken out Visitors are pictured with youngsters who were attending their regular playgroup. A Christmas fair, including a visiting clown and a variety of stalls, was attended by more than 100 people and raised £130 for centre funds. 3rd December 1986.14 of 34The World of Christmas was the title of a production at Lepton CofE School and these youngsters were among 90 pupils who twice presented different customs and carols from around the world for parents and younger children. Twelve children helped to raise the money when they took part in a sponsored walk held in Greenhead Park by the Huddersfield wildlife group, and some cash came from a sale of sweets, buns and toys at the school. 4th December 1986.17 of 34Newsome Brownies did their bit for Third World countries when they held a bring and buy sale, pottery stall and coffee evening. Proceeds of about £50, were shared between a Sight Savers appeal to help eye problems in the Third World, launched by television's Blue Peter children's programme, and their own funds. The 24 brownies who helped were all from the 81st Newsome Church group. The event was held in the church hall. 1st December 1986.18 of 34Off to work they go... Colne Valley countryside warden David Finnis (second right) and his team are joined in a tree-planting session by helpers from among staff and students at Kirkburton Social Education Centre. They were in Marsden to plant trees and shrubs in the picnic area at Tunnel End and at other sites in the area as part of National Tree Week. Planting will continue throughout Colne Valley until Easter. 3rd December 1986.19 of 34A rattling good job... Reggie Rat thought so, anyway as he joined these children from Holme Junior and Infants School on a project as part of National Tree Week. Reggie is the mascot of the recycling section of Keeping Kirklees Warm Co-op, a community programme based at Armitage Bridge Mills. He decided to help the planting at Field Lane Farm because the trees were bought by the schoolchildren with money they raised by selling waste paper for recycling. 4th December 1986.20 of 34Everyone wants a hand in presenting this £50 cheque to field worker Mrs Joan Haigh, of Huddersfield Pre-School Playgroups' Association. Handing it over are children from St John's Church School Playgroup, Golcar, which raised the money with a sponsored fancy dress pub crawl and jumble sale. Miss Examiner, Madeline Garbutt, and television cartoon character Danger Mouse are pictured with some of the young audience before they performed the switch on ceremony. The massive turnout of youngsters suited perfectly the theme chosen by Huddersfield Retail Association for its festive celebrations - It's a Children's Christmas. Mr Peter Marshall , chairman of the association's promotions committee, said there were 20,000 bulbs - double the number last year - giving a festive glow to New Street, King Street, Market Place, the Piazza, Market Avenue and Market Walk. They cost £5,500, paid for with donations from industry and commerce in Huddersfield, and funds raised by the Retail Association, which has also organised late-night shopping. 28th November 1986.23 of 34Someone's not singing as these children from Netherton Infants School present carols at a special ceremony at the switching on of the Christmas tree lights in Netherton by Mr Edward Hobson, chairman of the Village Association. Prayers were said by South Crosland Vicar the Rev Martin Russell and Netherton Methodist minister the Rev Donald Dean. South Crosland Junior School pupils also sang carols. 1st December 1986.24 of 34Father Christmas arrived early for these tiny tots at a mothers' and toddlers' group at St John's CofE Junior and Infants School, Golcar. Sixteen new toys, including baby walkers, Wendy houses and a new tricycle were presented to play leader Mrs Angela Hampshire (pictured) by the Junction pub at Golcar.
