The festival has attracted dozens of beers and ales from across the country, provided by independent brewers. Visitors can also sample ciders, perry's and a selection of foreign bottled beers. Children from each year group performed a variety of musical and ballet pieces, including solos by Richard Tuddenham on the trombone; Joe Gaunt, vocal; Gillian Senior, drums and Louise Emsley, who accompanied the maypole dancers with a piano accordion. An estimated £50-£60 was raised as members of the public were encouraged to lay down coins in a zig-zag on the pavement outside the hall. All the staff at the office in Buxton Way, entered into the spirit of the day, donning boaters, blazers and a variety of hats. Raising money to send members of the group to the 1991 World Scout Jamboree in South Korea a team of eight cyclists hope to complete the 874-mile trip in just over three days. Setting off from Cornwall on June 29 they will ride in relays of 10 miles and aim to be in the North of Scotland 80 hours later. About eight children have been cleaning up the dyke, between the Hollow and Sefton Lane following a talk from national Riverwatch co-ordinator Glen Cockshaw. Sarah, of Osprey Drive, Netherton, won the award for the senior dancer with most points in the senior classes. She was also among the heat winners who qualified for next year's Miss Dance of Great Britain Final and was third in the North of England senior ballet championships at the festival. Sarah, pictured with her trophy, has been dancing at Huddersfield's Victoria Wade School since she was four and is studying for her student teacher's certificate. Mr Iwan Czolacz, 66, of Wood Street, Longwood, last saw his sister in 1944 when he left his home in the Ukraine. He settled in Huddersfield in 1955 and has a wife Domenika, and two grown-up sons Ð John 31, and Andrew, 29. Mr Czolacz, who has been a butcher for more than 25 years, has never been able to contact his sister Maria, 63. Now - after waiting three months to get passports and a further two weeks in Moscow for visas - and she and her 31-year-old son, Michail, are in Huddersfield. But they have only until July 5 to catch up on a lifetime of stories. Said Mr Czolacz: 'I have never dared dream that I would see my sister again. It is something I cannot describe. David, of Woodlands Road, Lepton completed half-a-mile, a total of 40 lengths at Almondbury Swimming Baths along with his father John. David's grandmother, Mrs Barbara Walker, of Woodsome Drive, Fenay Bridge was a patient at the Breast Clinic, and the money which he raised will go towards a coffee morning to be held at her home tomorrow in aid of the appeal. 11th June 1990.25 of 42Shields of success - Lepton County First School swam off with two top awards in a school's swimming event. At the Kirkburton and Denby Dale area schools' swimming gala, the youngsters took the girls' and boys' combined shield and the boys' shield. The school's students answered 50 questions Ð some getting full marks. The money will go to ITV's Telethon appeal. The school also won a £200 voucher to spend on educational equipment after its name was drawn out of a hat at a special Telethon festival in Roundhay Park, Leeds. The championships were in Middleton, Leeds, and were organised by the International Dance TeachersÕ Association. 7th June 1990.30 of 42Pupils at Marsden Infants School, Tom Challenger and Melanie Millward (pictured) had an expected boost to history lessons when they unearthed an artefact of their own. Workmen repairing the roof discovered a plaque presented to the school's first ever head teacher Mr Joseph Webster, in recognition of his 50 years service to the school, in 1871. The 119-year-old plaque was commissioned, so the find was a complete surprise. 'It was a very interesting discover for the children,' said current head teacher, Mrs Gail Newton. 7th June 1990.31 of 42Rainbow Stampeders - more stamps for the Stop Press Stamped. Stop Press can hand them over to Kirkwood Hospice. 6th June 1990.32 of 42Key of the door - Clr Dave Harris performs the opening ceremony of a house which is to be used for a nursery, a pentions' lunch club and other community activities. The building in Town Avenue is for tenants of 306 houses off Leeds Road which are being modernised by Kirklees Council. Around £6m is being spent on new kitchens and bathrooms, double glazing and stone cleaning. Some houses have been converted into flats. 6th June 1990.33 of 42Balancing act - Mr Derek Whiteley, centre, has retired as a skilled balancer from motor manufacturers Brook Crompton, Huddersfield, where he has worked for 45 years. Mr Whiteley, 65, of Old Road, Holmbridge, started work as a winder but for the past 30 years has been a balancer. Married with two sons, he will now fill his time with DIY jobs, gardening and walking. 6th June 1990.34 of 42Here we go, here we go - school friends didn't believe Martin Whitwam when he told them he was off to Italy to see England's game against Egypt in the World Cup. But the 13-year-old, of The Ridgeways, Linthwaite, is Italy-bound thanks to the generosity of Kenneth Woods. Grandad Kenneth, 57, won two tickets to the crucial clash by answering football questions on a chocolate bar wrapper. But he was not that keen on flying to the World Cup hot spot and offered them to his son, also called Kenneth Wood. Kenneth, 17, insisted nephew Martin was the real football fanatic and should have the tickets instead. Martin's mother, Mrs Annette Whitwam, said: 'Martin still can't really believe he's going. Seventeen-year-old Lee Blackburn, the Slaithwaite player who captains the Yorkshire junior away side, has just won the Huddersfield Junior Merit. The event also included a fancy dress contest, Golcar Youth Band, the Paddock Limelights and a Scout competition. 3rd June 1990.39 of 42Diamonds are forever - Mr Lewis and Mrs Doris Bradley celebrate 60 years of marriage. The couple, who live at Crosland Street, Crosland Moor, received a telegram from the Queen congratulating them on their diamond wedding. Mr and Mrs Bradley, who are both 87 years old, were joined by their daughter and two grand-daughters when they had an open house on Saturday. 7th June 1990.40 of 42A clean shave - Kirklees planning department workers hand over £55 to Kirkwood Hospice after Andy Rushby was sponsored by colleagues to have his moustache shaved off. Mr Rushby had one half of his moustache shaved off in the morning and the other in the afternoon. 7th June 1990.41 of 42Huddersfield pair Claire Hambleton and Rebecca Lee (pictured left and second left in the front row, flanked by fellow-competitors) won the Huddersfield and District Lawn Tennis League's Gledholt Cup when they beat Angela Sykes and Stephanie Sykes (Fenay Bridge) 6-5, 6-4 in the final, which was rained off at Thongsbridge last Sunday and eventually played in midweek at Longley.
