Town striker Dale Tempest presents Shepley cubs with the trophy after the pack's team won its league for the second year running. The team competed against six other sides in the Huddersfield South-East District cubs league, winning every match and conceding only three goals. 21st March 1986.4 of 17Longwood scout Andrew Crosland, pictured with assistant county commissioner Mr Roger Williams, is making national scouting officials sit up and take note. The 13-year-old Royds Hall High School pupils is one of only two Scouts on the National Scout Advisory Board and he's the first from the North to be selected for the honour. 8th March 19865 of 17Watch the birdie... Mrs Stephanie Coghlan of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, tells Bradley Infants School pupils about the problems birds face in winter. More than 180 pupils listened to Mrs Coghlan and watched a slide show. The RSPB says this winter's extreme weather is now beginning to take its toll, with an increased number of reports of dead or dying birds. 10th March 19866 of 17An appeal for writing materials for youngsters in Ethiopia and the Sudan has gone so well that a temporary halt has been called to collecting. Mrs Lynne Barrow, whose idea sparked the massive response, said hundreds of pens, pencil, crayons and gifts of writing paper had been received. The children planted trees and shrubs bought with a £145 grant from West Yorkshire County Council. The garden will be used by children in work on plants and wildlife for their environmental studies. 19th March 1986.8 of 17Seven-year-old Edie Morgan won a small part of the burned York Minster for her efforts to design a piece for the minister's ceiling. A competition organised by the BBC children's television programme, Blue Peter, asked children to design a modern boss - the raised circular area on church vaults. Edie, who goes to Honley Infant School, designed a picture which featured a space shuttle and Halley's Comet. 7th March 19869 of 17Talented young Mirfield artist Steven Stanley had a brush with Life At The Top today. As part of a national junior Boy's Brigade competition 8-year-old Steven of Lower Hopton, was chosen by his group to spend a day as an artist. Steven worked with Mirfield artist Mr Frank Copley until lunchtime then was due to visit Mirfield's Easthorpe Art Gallery, a Leeds art shop and the Henry Moore Gallery in Leeds. 1st March 198610 of 17Raring to go! Youngsters Kathryn Wigley, John Steel and James Gledhill get to grips with the obstacles at Birchencliffe Playgroup's sponsored race. Some 42 children tackled 10 obstacles in two races to raise money to buy new toys for the group, which meets at Birchencliffe Parish Hall. 4th March 198611 of 17Reading up on their faraway destinations are Caroline Normanton(left) and Joanne Sharp, who have been chosen to represent North East England Guides for an experiment in international living. Caroline, 18, of Rastrick, an assistant guider with 3rd Rastrick St John's Brownies, will be going to Mexico. Joanne, 16, of Brighouse, a Brownie leader and Ranger with 3rd Rastrick, is off to Ecuador. The girls, who are both pupils of Brighouse High School, will set off in July for three weeks, staying with families. 7th March 198612 of 17Young Timothy Hutton displays a Holme Valley cub scout swimming trophy watched by other members of Thurstonland cubs winning team. The 8th Holme Valley (Thurstonland) pack were overall winners of the Holme Valley cub scouts district swimming gala at Cambridge Road Baths. 5th March 198613 of 17Pupils of the Clare Doosey School of Dancing in Kirkheaton won a total of 19 cups when they competed in the Leeds Stage Dance Festival. 26th February 198614 of 17Two up-and-coming members of Huddersfield Gym Club have plenty to celebrate at the moment. Nine-year-old Birdis McLean of Paddock Junior School, has been named club gymnast of the year 1985 and Joanna Denes, an eight-year-old pupil at Lindley Junior School, is the recreational gymnast of the year. 25th February 1986.15 of 17Skelmanthorpe First and Nursery School has been presented with £700 worth of computer equipment. They received new disk drives to replace their old cassettes, a print-out unit and a colour screen. The package also includes two computer trolleys, so the machines can be moved around the school without being uncoupled. The equipment was handed over to the school by Mr Mike Tayles (left) chairman of the Friends of the School Association, which raised the cash. 28th February 198616 of 17Chocolate chomping Moor End High School pupils have worked their way through almost 6,000 KitKats in the last five months-and all in a good cause. Chocolate manufacturer Rowntree Mackintosh have promised that for every KitKat wrapper collected they will donate three pence to holidays for handicapped children, so the Moor End donation is already over ¿150.
