_ The Big Society – Following my article recently on The Big Society, Jane Barff has very kindly sent me details of two more of our local gardening groups that help to hold the fragile fabric of our society together.
Huddersfield Fuchsia and Geranium Society hold their monthly meetings on the third Thursday of the month at St Francis Church, Fixby Road, Fixby, starting at 7.30pm. Annual subscription is £6, but you can visit as a non-member for £2 for each meeting. A wide variety of speakers visit the club and the club has a major presence at the Huddersfield Show each year.
The Huddersfield Allotment and Gardens Federation meet at Turnbridge Working Men’s Club, St Andrew’s Road, Huddersfield at 7.45pm on the third Monday of the month. All are welcome.
If you are the secretary of a gardening or associated club and want to let the rest of Huddersfield and district know, why not write to me at Graham’s Big Horticultural Society, Features Office, Huddersfield Daily Examiner, PO Box A26, Queen Street South, Huddersfield, HD1 3DU.
_ Grow Your Own Weekend – If you are one of the thousands of people just starting to grow some of your own fruit and vegetables this year, whether for economic or healthy eating reasons, you might like to attend the Grow Your Own Weekend at RHS Gardens Harlow Carr near Harrogate on March 26 and/or 27 from 10am to 4pm. There are demonstrations, talks by RHS experts and exhibitors as well as all the other delights of the RHS Gardens. Normal RHS Garden admission costs apply – free admission for RHS members.
