It is thought that 1% of the British population has coeliac disease, a potentially serious condition caused by a reaction to gluten in everyday foods such as bread and breakfast cereals. Symptoms are varied and range in severity. Midwife Claire Howlett never knew she had coeliac disease until her 10-year-old daughter, Georgia, was diagnosed. Now they live gluten-free.
