IT’S time they scrapped the transfer window.

At the very least, if they are going to have a summer and winter window, the summer one should be finished before the English season starts.

I know it’s not easy to have conformity when clubs can sign people from all over Europe and all over the world, but to have the window closing three games into our season just seems madness to me.

Town, of course, have experienced exactly what I’m on about with Jordan Rhodes going to Blackburn Rovers.

A price tag of £8m is a fantastic consolation for him going – and all the reports I’ve read suggest it’s a guaranteed sum, which is good – but Town now have to hope they can get some business done very quickly.

Finding a replacement for 20, 30 or 40 goals is not an easy thing to do, and while it might not happen immediately, it does put pressure on a club with the transfer window ready to be slammed shut tonight.

Players and agents are often the driving force behind deals being done, and I don’t suppose they would want to return to the days when there was just one transfer deadline day in March.

Agents, especially, want to help things along because they only earn when a player signs a new contract or he moves club.

It is a crazy situation the way the system works right now and even clubs in the top flight, like QPR, get caught up in it.

They signed half-a-dozen players in January, another half dozen in the summer and, now it’s getting close to the window closing for four months, they might well capture another three or four players for good measure.

That just can’t be good for anybody.

It impacts on managers, too. They prepare for a season with certain personnel in place and, while you might suspect one of them is hot property, you don’t know whether he is going to move on or not so he obviously remains part of all you are doing.

When someone like that goes so close to the embargo, it does make life more difficult for the selling club, even though they may have had no option under the circumstances, and that’s just another reason why I think the system should be changed.

If it’s going to stay as a summer and winter window, then the summer one should close before our season starts.
