David Sinmonite of Kirkburton – who is proud to still use fountain pen and snail mail – writes with fondness about blue suede shoes after I recorded in this column that they were back in fashion 50 years after Carl Perkins and Elvis sang about them.

“I remember wearing a pair of Tommy Steele shoes with musical notes on. This would be late 1950s. Very smart indeed,” says David.

And they still are, according to fashion experts. Although I'm not so sure about the Tommy Steele musical motif.

Jack Armitage of Crosland Moor says he had a pair of green suede shoes.

“But the nicest shoes I ever owned were a pair of apron fronted, two tone chocolate and cream, camel leather shoes. I bought them from a shop in Port Said in 1945. The only drawback was they didn't go very well with bell bottoms and a Naval uniform.

“I didn't get to wear them until I was demobbed in 1946 and I wore them and wore them until they just fell apart.”
