It's an extra special year for the Mastersingers.
For after celebrating their 21st anniversary in March at St Paul’s, the Huddersfield singers will be staging a special concert tomorrow (7.30pm) at Holmfirth High School to mark the retirement of musical director Jim Morgan from teaching.
Having started his career teaching percussion he was, for many years, the Director of Music at Holmfirth High and, more recently, the Director of Community Music in the school.
Jim is well known in Holmfirth and Huddersfield music circles as a conductor and singer. He has also sung bass and played drums for the Mastersingers for many years as well as arranging and writing for the group and, more recently, taking over the reins as joint musical director with Rob Wilding.
The Mastersingers was founded by Alan Simmons about 30 years ago. Alan was Jim’s predecessor as Head of Music at Holmfirth High so it seems only appropriate that the group that has also had both men as musical director should be giving Jim’s final concert as a member of staff at Holmfirth High.
The concert – called Still Crazy … – is a blend of old favourites and new items that have become the group’s trademark over the years and will feature many of Jim’s original compositions and arrangements.
