Ten-year-old Sarah Bett, right, of Mount School, hands over a cheque for £221 to Tina Pollard, 15, of the Candlelighters, who raise money for youngsters suffering from serious diseases. Tina, of Greetland, suffers from leukaemia and is one of the youngsters to benefit from cash raised by the Candlelighters. They were among the cast of a musical show presented at the 105th annual festival of the Band of Hope. The performance was watched by an audience which included the United Kingdom and Yorkshire Band of Hope Union Queens. Sunday School president Norman Riley was producer and Reg Moore the accompanist. 12th November 1987.20 of 55Member of a recently formed majorette troop are literally in the limelight after winning a top trophy at a seaside tournament. The Paddock-based Limelights were in Bridlington for the Universal Championships, where they won a cup in the military freestyle section and were placed second overall in show majorettes. 10th November 1987.21 of 55These four youngsters have all hit the cub world's bullseye by earning their gold arrow awards. The cubs - (from left) David Rowles, Scott Archer, Simon Hargreaves and Jonathan Marshall - have each completed 36 different tasks to clinch the coveted award. En route they pitched tents, became television critics, tried out new sports, studied first aid and visited Leeds/Bradford airport and police and ambulance stations. 4th November 1987.22 of 55Banking on success... Sixth-form students at Colne Valley High School get practical experience in business studies by running a school bank for the younger pupils. The sixth-formers (left) do all the banking jobs under the supervision of teachers and Midland Bank staff. For their first-form customers it is a chance to learn about opening and owning a genuine bank account. 9th November 1987.23 of 55Up, up and away go nearly 200 balloons, both large and small, to mark the end of a project on flight completed by these youngsters from Ashbrow Junior School, Sheepridge. Over the past six weeks pupils have been looking at various aspects of flight, including aircraft, spacecraft and birds. As a finale, each pupil was allowed to release a balloon. Each of the school's seven classes also released a larger balloon with a prepaid envelope attached asking the finder to write back. 6th November 1987.24 of 55Teamwork... Senior pupils at Lydgate School, New Mill, have organised a Christmas Fete to help buy their school a video camera. Preparations for the fete involved the pupils in advertising, ticket printing and setting up a bank account as part of their social skills work. 9th November 1987.25 of 55Youngsters at a Huddersfield community centre have launched a fight to keep their youth worker. Children at a youth group at the Hudawi centre want to keep Miss Glendene Gill, whose year-long contract is up this month, and are prepared to dig into their own pockets to help pay her wages. Some of the youngsters involved are picture with Miss Gill and a petition calling for her contract to be renewed. 21st November 1987.26 of 55Taking their teddies for a picnic organised by Holmfirth and Meltham Lions are these youngsters with president Mr David Mosley. Every penny raised for the Bodyscanner Appeal really counts - and children from the Lindley pre-school playgroup and toddlers' group have raised £91.94 by collecting pennies in Smarties tubes. Amanda Hinchliffe and other members of 5th Holme Valley (Brockholes) Brownies with a cheque for £250 for the Bodyscanner appeal. Supt David Cornmell (left) presented these children from Marsden Junior School with certificates and badges for 'safe cycling.' Also with them is Pc John Bryce, who ran a course at the school with Pc David Ingham during five afternoons. Twenty-four children, all nine , 10 and 11-year-olds, received the awards. The seven groups from Dewsbury, Batley, Spenborough, Scissett, Holmfirth, Colne Valley and Cambridge Road on Sunday when more than 110 youngsters from seven to 11 put their skills to the test in what for most of them was their first inter-club gala. 28th June 1987.40 of 55The bodyscanner appeal is £100 better off thanks to Linthwaite Methodist Playgroup - and playgroup chairman Mrs Susan Hynes and helpers proudly show off the cheque. The cash was raised with a jumble sale at the chapel plus a donation from playgroup funds. 30th June 1987.41 of 55Making a big splash at Huddersfield Sports Centre during a fun session with this inflatable monster. The monster was just one of six inflatables in the pool during a demonstration session enjoyed by children and parents. Manager Mr Rob Blackshaw said fun sessions would be organised at the Sports Centre during the school holidays. 3rd July 1987.42 of 55Budding Rugby League star, 11-year-old David Holmes, receives a badge and certificate from Jim Conlan, secretary of the Huddersfield and District League, for attending a coaching course organised by league at Arena 84.
