Fifteen-year-old Adele, a pupil of Colne Valley High School, passed several badge tests, helped with Golcar Brownies and cared for a handicapped child during a week's camp. The third shield was won in a quiz organised for the Huddersfield area by the Methodist Association. 20th January 1988.24 of 36Smiles all round - and nursery children at Beech School, Golcar, had good reason to look happy as they handed over a £20 cheque to the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary special care baby unit. The money was raised in a collection by their parents after a performance of Christmas songs and a nativity play at the end of last term. They emerged winners from a competition run by the Remploy organisation in conjunction with an exhibition called A Book Is A Good Friend, which toured local libraries some weeks ago. The contest, which included a colouring competition and looking after books, was split between South Kirklees and North Kirklees and into two age groups. The youngsters, led here by Kirsty Dunnell, are all young members of the Salvation Army in Mirfield and are to present the musical Jonah-Man Jazz on Saturday. It will be staged in the Salvation Army Hall in Nettleton Road. Twelve-year-old Kelly, of Cowlersley, won two Fluppet Puppets, a box of Golden Wonder crisps and a set of 'I'm an animal helper' badges. She receive her prizes from Insp Kevin Manning, of the RSPCA, at a special presentation. Also receiving prizes were Michael Maude (10), of Holmfirth; and Christopher Greenwood (7) , of Taylor Hill. Peter Beresford, a member of Huddersfield South West Scout Fellowship, with some of the cub scouts who took part in the annual five-a-side soccer competition he organised at Newsome High School. Eighteen teams from the Huddersfield South West district took part and the winners were the 4th Huddersfield (Golcar) "B" team, who beat the 9th Huddersfield (Crosland Hill) Methodist "A" team 1-0 in the final. The winners were presented with a the trophy by Mr Philip Hayhurst, district cub scout leader, and all finalists received a commemorative medal. The referees were Mr Geoff Ellis and Mr Eddie Frost. 24th January 1988.29 of 36Pedal power... Bernard Howgate, who completed a round-the-world cycle tour which took him 20,000 miles and to 23 countries a few years ago, stopped off at Upperthong Junior and Infants School to tell pupils about his travels and show slides. He is pictured with two of the youngsters, Robert Jubb and Vicky Hair. Bernard sold everything he owned - including his engineering business - to finance the trip. He has written a book chronicling his travels. The musical show, a three-night sell out, is the first panto staged at the school for many years. Youngsters from the fourth year, plus a chorus of third-year pupils, make up the 90-strong cast. The part of the panto camel in each show is reserved for... mums and dads. The guitar strumming Mayor was an instant smash hit with pupils during a visit to St Joseph's RC Junior and Infant School, Dalton. The Mayor Clr George Speight - helped by deputy headmaster Mr Gerry Whelan (left) - delighted the children, when he appeared as a special guest star during a music lesson. Headmaster Mr Tony Parker said: "The children, particularly the younger ones, though he was great. Within a couple of minutes they were completely at their ease and were all over him." The mayor and his wife, Joan, were treated to a special assembly in the junior school, before being taken on a guided tour of every classroom. 29th January 1988.35 of 36Slapstick humour provided Comic Relief at Royds Hall High School, Paddock yesterday. And pupils (from left) David Cuthbert, Gail Osbourne and Fiona Harrison are pictured preparing to launch a water and custard pie attack. Events included a custard pie quiz, a chance to Soak the Teacher, Splatto-grams and a concert staged by fifth-formers.
