Pupils from local schools got an insight into the work of the police force at the first of two open days at the station. Singing star Vince Hill goes through a dance routine with youngsters Êfor the Stuart Stage School in Heckmondwike. Fifteen pupils of the school, all aged between eight and 15, are to take part in "Aladdin"at Halifax Civic Theatre. Vince plays the emperor, and he visited the Stuart Stage School after going to Halifax to try his costumes for the show. Jill Stuart, who runs the school with her sister, Janet, is choreographing the pantomime. Her pupils will be among the chorus. They are: Joanne Thornton, Joanne Etherington, Emma Pyrah, Catheryn Lee, Cathy Sutton, Samantha Kilkenny, Susan Hamilton, Dawn Lambert, Nikki Brook, Lisa Firth, Zecky Mortimer, Victoria Yates, Jill Michell, Catherine Sweeney and Gaynor Sharp. 18th September 1985.4 of 23A Huddersfield garage swapped a 16.2 hands horse for 140 horsepower in the latest move in a part-exchange deal. Moldgreen's Junction Garage last week allowed a Skelmanthorpe man to trade in the horse for a Ford Fiesta - registered COW 692W. Salesman Mr Lou Lomax said the horse has been bought by Huddersfield businessman John Whitworth (pictured) - in part exchange for a 140hp boat. Mr Lomax said: "The boat is now on sale. Since our horse/car part-exchange last week we have had a few strange requests." 26th September 1985.5 of 23They're Ideal - Valerie Pears and son, Richard were judged the winners of the Examiner Ideal Homes mother and baby contest. The competition run by Supersnaps, carried with it a first prize of £250. Mrs Pears, of Salendine Nook, is expecting her second child soon, she said she would put the money aside for Richard (2) and the new baby. 17th September 1985.6 of 23Wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of Emma Louise Riordan (left), Samantha Calder and Dollar the pony at the annual gala organised by the Huddersfield Division police sports club. The event at Woodfield Park, Lockwood, featured an appearance by Radio 2 DJ 'Diddy' David Hamilton. Activities throughout the afternoon included a display by the Golden Girl Majorettes, from Honley, and there were various stalls. There was also a two-mile fun run around the police sports ground, a selection of children's races and a gymkhana - but five-a-side soccer and pitch-and-putt competitions had to be abandoned because of the weather. 1st September 1985.7 of 23Competitors for the great 'Lawn Mower Grand Prix' line-up on the 'Sands Hatch' starting grid, waiting for Holmfirth Round Table chairman Mr Trevor Coldwell to drop the chequered flag. Some 20 contestants entered the three classes of races - held on Sands recreation ground - organised by the Round Tablers with sponsorship from Whitbread's brewery to raise money for Holme Valley charities. All the machines had their cutting blades removed before the races. Amanda Berry and some of the other dancers are pictured with the cheque. 27th August 1985.11 of 23Saying "hello" at Huddersfield railway station are members of Longwood Amateur Operatic Society who are taking part in the latest production, "Hello Dolly" - which starts when Dolly arrives by train. The production will be something of a family affair with the four main parts all being played by members of the Mair family. Shirley is Dolly, and her husband, Tom, is appropriately the man she will marry, Vandergelder. Their son, Stephen is Cornelius, and his wife, Joanne, is hat shop owner Mrs Malloy. Some £50 raised when the children held a summer fair featuring cake, book and white-elephant stalls will be split between the RSPCA and the NSPCC. The couple, aged 80 and 81 will marry at Huddersfield Register Office under the watchful eyes of their friends from Birchencliffe Over-60s Club, where they met, and Lindley Darby and Joan Club. 2nd September 1985.14 of 23Actress Thelma Barlow - Mavis Riley in the top TV soap opera Coronation Street - was at Greenhead Park to open the Examiner Ideal Home Exhibition. Snapping the star for their photo album are Rawthorpe sisters Helen (left) and Caroline Munro. Thelma, who from the age of six was brought up in Huddersfield, visited many of the displays, stands and exhibitions at the nine-day show. 7th September 1985.15 of 23A young victim of muscular dystrophy leads a sponsored walk from Huddersfield town centre to Holmfirth to raise money to fight the disease. Eleven-year-old Anthony Terence Grayson, who is wheelchair-bound and his mother, Mrs Ivy Grayson, of Almondbury, were joined by walkers form local churches of all denominations, including Oakes Baptist, Lindley Parish Church and Kirkheaton Parish Church. They hoped to raise between £250 and £300 with their walk. 14th September 1985.16 of 23Fund-raising footballers (from left) Jonathan Hirst, Adrian Ramsden, Steven Hirst, Matthew Kelly and Kevin Brook pictured with a cheque for £104 for the Bradford City disaster appeal. The five boys, all pupils of Honley High School, took part in a sponsored football match, featuring fathers against pupils, at the end of their last term at Honley Junior School. Sponsors pledged money per goal and the match ended in victory for the fathers team. 17th September 1985.17 of 23Shiver me timbers! Pirate captain Alan Ellis and his crew from the 1st Holme Valley scouts climb aboard their float for the annual Holme Valley torchlight procession. The float was one of 20 which paraded from the Drill Hall at Thongsbridge to Holmbridge cricket field. A total of 63 youth groups, including majorettes, cubs, scouts, guides, brownies, bands and youth clubs took part. 6th September 1985.18 of 23The thrills of the circus came to Meltham Carnival at the weekend, thanks to these youngsters and helpers from Meltham Mills playgroup. They joined in the parade through the village, headed by Meltham and Meltham Mills Band, to start the annual carnival off in style. Also joining in the parade was carnival queen Joanne Hirst (13) and attendants Adele Butterworth, Sarah Kyffin, Lucy Edinburgh, Michael Irving, Leanne Baker and Vicki Walker. 7th September 1985.19 of 23Off on a sponsored toddle are these mothers and youngsters from Rowley Hill playgroup at Lepton. The event was held to buy paints and equipment for the group, which meets at Rowley Hill Working Men's Club. All the entrants managed to complete 10 laps of Lepton Middle School field. They hoped to raise £50. 11th September 1985.20 of 23Sam the golden retriever is not only Rachel Brown's best friend - he opened a new way of life for her. For seven-year-old Rachel used to be scared of dogs - now she's winning prizes in junior dog-handling classes all over the country. Rachel, of Slipper Lane, Mirfield, recently qualified for the semi-finals of the national junior handling championship in London next year. "We bought Rachel a golden retriever puppy, Sam, to help her get over her fear of dogs," said her father, Mr Adrian Brown. "It's certainly worked - she's so dog-mad now I don't get a look in." Rachel and one-year-old Sam have been winning prizes together for the last six months - ever since Sam, whose kennel club name is Shamanda Shenenigan, was old enough to enter shows. 27th September 1985.21 of 23Spring Grove Junior School, pupils (from left) Angela Hayre, Shabiner Rafiq, Maninver Kaur, Gurden Singh and Ashraf Riaz prepare to launch their balloons in a race to mark the town's Community Health Council's exhibition on care in the community for mentally ill and mentally handicapped people.
