For the 25 members of St Andrew's Methodist Church Brownie Pack have produced a 25ft-long card to send to the happy couple. Each Brownie contributed a foot-long section to the card, which is red, white and blue, with silver and glitter. It is decorated with drawings of wedding cakes, wedding dresses and flowers. 14th July 1986.5 of 18Happy ending ... entertainer Malcolm Yaffe keeps the last pupils of Kirklees' smallest school happy during their last school party. Whitley Lower CofE First and Middle School, near Dewsbury, has only ten pupils, aged between five and 12. Now Kirklees Council says the 150-year-old school must close. Pupils will move to schools at Overthorpe or Thornhill, Dewsbury. 7th July 1986.6 of 18A revolution was started by pupils of Mirfield High School this morning. And they were given full support by the teaching staff, for the 50 or so pupils were re-living the storming of the Bastille in 1789 as part of a special Bastille Day organised by the school's French department. Some even lost their heads on a guillotine, specially made by the craft department - fortunately, however, the victims were only paper mache models. Also pictured are Battyeford Middle School pupils Dawn Lewis and Julie Bennett, who raised a further £32.00 for Sport Aid with a sponsored 10 lap run round Mirfield adventure playground. 8th July 1986.9 of 18And it's time to have a party, nine year old Richard Ashley (left) and his friends were among the 150 or so cubs from nine packs who attended a party on the Piazza to celebrate the setting up of the cubs 70 years ago. Turning up in relays through the day, they shared birthday cakes with passersby and put on displays of cub activities. Attractions also included a balloon race and advanced by Newsome Scouts band. Shepley cubs organised the event and were joined by packs from Emley, Skelmanthorpe, Dalton, St Joseph's, Denby Dale, Clayton West, Kirkburton and Shelley. 5th July 1986.10 of 18Dressed for the occasion- stallholders at Slaithwaithe Elizabethan fair. The event was the first carnival to be held in Slaithwaithe for several years, but it is hoped it will now be an annual event. About 150 people joined the procession, which included horse drawn floats, and the Slaithwaithe Guisers' giant, Nathandriel. Displays were given by Marsden Pride Morris Dancers and Kirkburton Rapier Dancers. ÊOther attractions included a pillory, Elizabethan style games and stalls. About £100 was raised for Slaithwaithe Community Association, which organized the event. The mirfield cubs - 10 year Olds Alex Sykes (left), William Arrowsmith (center) and Ian Wainwright, along with John Clarkin - receive the awards from district cub leader Mrs. Janet Ingham. ÊThe awards were made after the four completed 36 tasks including spending a night under canvas, lighting a fire and cooking on it, finding out about plants and taking part in a pack meeting to learn about cubs in other countries. 2nd July 1986.13 of 18Members of the Pathfinders youth group at St Paul's church, Shepley, present tapes of disco music to youngsters at Turnshaws School, Kirkburton. The tapes were provided with money raised at a fashion show at the church hall, when Pathfinders and their leaders acted as models. The tapes were presented by leaders Carol Shore and Jane Robinson accompanied by Pathfinders Vicky Shore, Samantha Lees, Stephanie Rowe, Elizabeth Hudson, Karen Firth, Adrian Burrough and Darren Figg. 2nd July 1986.14 of 18The Variety Club of Great Britain - the celebrities' charity organization - has presented a minibus to Nortonthorpe Hall School, Scissett. TV presenter Richard Whiteley handed over the keys of the bus to acting head Mrs. Anne Mallinson, pictured with some of the youngsters. The £12,000 bus will be used to take the pupils on educational trips and will also be used to ferrying children to and from school. 1st July 1986.15 of 18Attempting to make her mark in the men's game of Rugby League is nine year old Sarah Tracey, who has joined up with the boys on a coaching course run by the Huddersfield schools and the Huddersfield and District League at Royds Hall. Teaching her how to tackle is Huddersfield Barracudas forward Simon Kenworthy, watched by the boys and the rest of the coaches. The course continues with another session tonight and ends with the final night on Monday. 30th June 1986.16 of 18Keeping Britain tidy are these pupils of Birkby Infants School, seen receiving prizes from Kirklees mayor councilor Mrs. Mary Walsh for their anti litter and clean up campaign posters. The school has been running an environmental project on litter prevention, conservation, water pollution, dangerous litter, recycling, and the work of refuse collectors. Kirklees cleansing department visited school with a refuse collection vehicle and asked pupils to prepare posters. T shirts and sweatshirts were awarded for the best posters. The recipients were: Samera Hussain, James Crowther and Husna Iqbal (4/5 years olds); David Johnson, Isat Aziz, Elsa Woods, Simranjit Kaur (five/six year olds); Naomi Hutchenson, Stephen Ashcroft and Abid Bhatti (6/7 years olds). 30th June 1986.17 of 18War years were revisited when residents of Rose Mount, Birkby, held a 1940's street party in aid of the Kirkwood Hospice Appeal. The party featured the Huddersfield Youth Brass Ensemble - playing Glenn Miller music - a tea served at trestle tables, a tombola and a raffle. 29th June 1986.18 of 18
