Kirklees Deputy Mayor Clr David Wright was the special guest at a junior film festival at the Cannon Cinema, Queensgate, Huddersfield, hosted by children's entertainer Mr David Wright, of Twice Dayli, and the Yellowcoats from Batley. The film festival was organised by Huddersfield Retail Association in conjunction with the Examiner for 300 prizewinners from a jigsaw and colouring competition. The children were shown the film Short Circuit, entertained with games and competitions and given entry forms for a Retail Association treasure hunt. 20th May 1989. The youngsters donned home-made costumes, hats and jewellery as the school hosted a carnival evening at the end of a study into the Caribbean tradition. Kirklees Mayor Clr Colin Watson also called in to congratulate Mrs Mellor Ð and helped her to plant a willow tree in the grounds of the home to commemorate her birthday. Thirty relatives travelled to join staff and residents at a party for Mrs Mellor, formerly of New Hey Road, Oakes. Mrs Mellor is a widow and worked as a seamstress. Brighouse station has one of the worst records in the county for fundraising towards the ambulance service's bid to buy life-saving machines. They have made only £1,500 towards a £10,000 target. Huddersfield ambulance men have made more than £12,000. Donations can be handed in at the Brighouse Station. 16th May 1989. Wheelchair-bound Simon, 15, from Dewsbury, who is a boarder at Holly Bank School, Edgerton, completed camping, canoeing and abseiling as part of the award. He was also able to take part in motorcycle driving with the aid of a motorcycle trailer. Andrew, 15, of Acre Lane, Meltham, included television interviews on the European election, recorded for a BBC TV Newsround programme, as part of the work for his award. Mr James Watson, a butchery manager at Shepley Co-op for 25 years, is seen saying goodbye to his workmates. His farewell present from the Co-op Ð a collapsible chair Ð traditionally wrapped in butcherÕs stripes, will be of great use when he indulges his passion for a day at the races. Mr Watson, who is married and lives at Brockholes, got his first move towards his career in the Army during the Second World War. They did, however, raise between £1,000 and £1,500 for muscular dystrophy. Fourteen Holme Valley teams took part in the sponsored cycle on an exercise bike loaned by Inches Fitness Centre, Huddersfield. It was organised by White Hart manager Mr Steven Brown and the four-strong teams tried to clock up as big a mileage as possible in one hour. Drink vouchers worth £10 were given to the menÕs and womenÕs teams who covered most miles. They were also presented with trophies Ð and a large trophy went to the overall winners. Shell gave £500 to the school to buy 3,600 trees to be planted on a site above Marsden, which will benefit the drainage and shelter of the golf, cricket and football clubs. The youngster added the Yorkshire Under 10 title to the West Yorkshire title she already holds when the championships were held in York. The 14-mile Trans-Pennine Train, ideal for both walkers and cyclists, stretches from York to Southport, often following disused railways and canal paths. To mark the grand opening, 40 cyclists and 90 walkers are now midway through a week-long trek along the route. Yesterday the group stopped off at Dunford Bride before heading for Penistone. The trail is the brainchild of Sustrans Ð a Liverpool-based group which promotes safe routes for cyclists and pedestrians in both urban and rural areas. Sustrans spokesman Mr Ron Healey said: 'It all started when Barnsley Council asked us how best to develop its vast system of disused railways. The idea just grew from there.' 30th May 1989.
