The event on June 28 is a joint concert between Priest Lindley Band and Lindley CE Infants School, whose pupils will be singing and playing recorders. Pupils at Meltham County Primary School have been putting the finishing touches to an environmental project. The school is through the first stage of a national environmental competition to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Queen¿ accession to the throne. Judges from across the country will be coming in to inspect the school's adopted stream in Meltham. So the pupils rolled up their sleeves to give the stream an extra-thorough spring clean. The youngsters - from the Friday pack of the 5th Holme Valley (Meltham) Cubs - are (from left): Christopher Berry, Dean Sykes, Richard Berry, Martin Loyd, Sam Philpot and David Chitty. The gala week starts on June 27 and will climax with the gala in Meltham Hall Park on Sunday, July 5. This will feature a parade - complete with floats - from Broadlands to the park. The gala will feature rides, charity stalls, a coal carrying competition, the Cubs' tug-of-war, Meltham and Meltham Mills Band and majorettes. Gala Committee chairman Clr Shirley Watson said the week will feature dancing displays, a snooker competition, school fetes, a disco and a window-dressing competition. 27th May 1992.5 of 21Fun time... youngsters in fancy dress enjoy the sunshine at a fun day at Birkby Community Centre, organised to raise money for the Childhood Cancer Holiday Appeal. The event raised £257 for the charity, which aims to send Zoe Featherstone, of Birkby, on holiday. Youngsters took part in a fancy dress contest at the fun day and parents had an opportunity to buy items from a good-as-new stall. 26th May 1992.6 of 21Lining up for a fashion show are girls from Huddersfield youth clubs. The youngsters were taking part in a Greenpeace festival at Lockwood Youth Centre which included the fashion show. Other events during the one-day festival were T-shirt printing, kite making and banner designing. After a series of group games, they beat Bradford Grammar School 3-1 in the semi-finals and Outwood 4-3 in the final. Year seven pupils at King James¿School, Almondbury, raised more than £1,000 for charity with a sponsored spell. The money was split between the hearing dogs for the deaf charity and the children¿ ward at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. But they came a day too late for one pupil of Birkby Infant's and Nursery School, five-year-old Stephen Knight, who is in hospital after injuring his leg in a road accident. The other children played doctors, nurses and patients to learn about hospital work. The anniversary was marked by a packed week of events, including the opening of a toy library for children in the area, a picnic and a birthday party. The Plane Street, Newsome, nursery also ran an open house, where former pupils and staff were invited back to the classrooms. Some 60 children attend and almost 1,000 are thought to have attended since it opened. Their three teams have lost only two matches all season with the Under 16s and Under 13s winning Huddersfield Schools League sections and the Under 12s finishing second. The Under 12 side won seven of their 11 games, drawing three and losing one, while the Under 13 team had six wins and a draw in seven games. The Under 16s were the most successful, however, winning the cup with victory over Colne Valley on the Town Ground. They also lost in the quarter-finals of the West Yorkshire Cup. Local tenants, residents, pupils and youth groups were involved in the event, which also featured games and refreshments. 16th May 1992.14 of 21All dressed up and ready to go - Meltham youngsters get ready for a trip back in time. REception and year one children from Meltham County Junior, Infant and Nursery School visited Clark Hall at Wakefield, and they dressed for their adventure in 17th century costumes made by parents. The visit included cooking, singing, making soap, polishing, making butter, making pomanders - to ward off evil smells! - and dancing round a maypole. The theme of the day was nursery rhymes and fairy tales. 7th May 1992.15 of 21Tale of the tiger... a short play called The Tiger's Bones, by Ted Hughes, was one of the highlights of an arts and drama evening at Rawthorpe High School. The lower school pupils, pictured with their tiger, presented their play. Upper school GCSE students displayed art work. Minnie the pony was the star attraction at a spring fair held by Quarry Hill Playschool, Waterloo, yesterday. Sophie Cuthbert, a member of the playgroup, took her pony to the fair to give rides to the other children. The event was held at St Michael's and St Helen¿ Church, Waterloo, where the playschool meets, and it included stalls, a tombola and raffle.
