Julie Hurn raised the cash by organising fancy-dress pub crawls, raffles and charity evenings. Her family and friends helped out, as did staff and regulars at the Market Tavern pub, Leeds Road. The pub, run by one of Julie's friends, hosted many of the fund-raising events. The donation came from the 'community chest', run by the Forte hotel chain and the Conservation Foundation. Work is being done in the 20-acre grounds at the school to make them accessible to all pupils. Squirrels, rabbits, foxes, hares and pheasants all live and hunt in the school grounds and it is hoped the students will be able to use boardwalks and ramps to reach the most distant parts. The public toilets were due to be pulled down after being closed for a couple of years but Linthwaite Environment Society stepped in to renovate them. The Manchester Road toilets were re-opened during a Pride in Linthwaite day, which tied in with Linthwaite in Bloom. Now the village is gearing up for the summer bloom competition, which will be judged in the first few weeks of July. 13th June 1992.13 of 44A school's mini-bus appeal has been given a £500 boost thanks to regulars and staff at Kirkburton's White Swan pub. The pub - which organised fund-raising raffles and a pie and peas supper - gave the money to the village's Turnshaws School which is hoping to buy a new vehicle for pupils. Denby Dale Lions had challenged the Holmfirth and Meltham club to take part in the competition and ended up winning the event. They received a trophy, which had been held by Holmfirth and Meltham members for four years. The Denby Dale club will now keep the trophy until another local Lions group challenges them to a contest. The school's 186 pupils helped to raise the funds for the woodchip-covered area. They took part in a sponsored bounce in a bouncy castle and collected £933. They were just some of the children who descended on Marsden's Tunnel End Countryside Centre to help plant wild flowers to launch the start of the centre's Midsummer Madness project, which runs all this week. The events include talks, guided walks and a Sunday afternoon of activities. 15th June 1992.22 of 44Local people had a fun day out raising cash for the Cancer Relief Macmillan Fund. Terry Dean, of Scholes, Holmfirth, and his ten-year-old daughter, Rebecca, were two of the entrants in a Macmillion Mile Walk organised by the fund's Holmfirth committee. People paid £1 to take part in the walk and answer quiz questions. Supporters were also invited to help produce a mile of pennies in the churchyard at Holmfirth Parish Church. Similar events are being held all over the country in a bid to raise £20m to provide an extra 260 hospital-based nurses. Pupils of Holmfirth Junior and Infant School raised extra cash by collecting sponsorship cash to walk a mile to and from school. Mr Broadbent, 65, of Hebble Mount, Meltham, started with the firm as an assistant secretary in 1956. He became secretary in 1963 and a director in 1967. The company makes valves for the steam and chemical industry. Mr Broadbent received garden equipment from his workmates and DIY equipment from the firm. He is a member of Huddersfield Sailing Club and is an instructor for the Scout Association. The children at the Chamber of Commerce's Nursery explored the work of dentists, the emergency services and hospitals. A hospital and dentist's surgery were set up at the nursery and children visited the dressing-up corner to transform themselves into firefighters and police officers. Real life firefighters, nurses and police officers visited the nursery to talk about their work. Sheep, cattle and dog competitions will also be major attractions, with other classes for goats, mice, cavies, pigeons and poultry. Music will be provided by Honley Silver Band and a display will be given by Boar's Head Morris Dancers. There will also be dressage demonstrations, martial arts, goat driving and Yorkshire dry stone walling championships. 10th June 1992.30 of 44Kirklees Rebound dominated the West Yorkshire Trampoling competition at Bradford with Nicola Burton winning the ladies event from teammate Debbie Nicholson, who finished a close second. Emma Cromack and Leanne Mellor took fifth and sixth places respectively, while eight-year-old Nicola Burgin - in her first ladies competition - teamed up with Mellor and Burton to gain second team place. Leanne Mellor won the U19g while Debbie Nicholson won the U15g with Emma Cromack taking second. The U13g Anna Valentine took second with Catherine Torr in 14th. Nicola Burgin, Emma Auty and Rachel Beal came sixth, seventh and eighth respectively, and along with Sadie Riley finished second in the team event.
