These youngsters from Helme Junior and Infants school joined teacher Mrs Linda Tebb on a trip back to the 17th century to see at first hand how people coped with life during the reign of the Stuarts and Oliver Cromwell. A party of 30 children, accompanied by teachers, parents and friends, spent a day at Clarke Hall, in Wakefield, dressed in appropriate costume. Headmaster Mr Stuart Hoyle said: "The experience taught the children how different life was in those days. They lived history by recreating the atmosphere of the 17th century." Times were hard in those days and they were for Mr Hoyle, who played the part of a consumptive for the day. 30th June 1987.1 of 22Smart scanner supporters are these children from Birchencliffe Playgroup, who helped boost the proceeds from a coffee morning by filling Smartie tubes with pennies. The coffee morning was held by mum Mrs Sue Haigh at her home in Birchencliffe, and the event also included cake and handicraft stalls. Every penny raised for the Bodyscanner Appeal really counts - and children from the Lindley pre-school playgroup and toddlers' group have raised £91.94 by collecting pennies in Smarties tubes. Amanda Hinchliffe and other members of 5th Holme Valley (Brockholes) Brownies with a cheque for £250 for the Bodyscanner appeal. The money was raised when 24 Brownies, all aged between seven and 10, took part in a sponsored run round the playground at Brockholes C of E Infants and Junior School where they meet. 1st July 1987.6 of 22Pupils from Deighton Junior School are having a whale of a time producing a Biblical play as part of Deighton Carnival. The musical production, based on the story of Jonah and the Whale, was written by Mr Stephen Byrne, head of music at Headfield Middle School, Dewsbury. The childrens' acting skills have been nurtured by Mr Byrne's wife Marian, head of music at Deighton Junior School, and deputy head teacher Mr Andrew Allen. Supt David Cornmell (left) presented these children from Marsden Junior School with certificates and badges for 'safe cycling.' Also with them is Pc John Bryce, who ran a course at the school with Pc David Ingham during five afternoons. Twenty-four children, all nine , 10 and 11-year-olds, received the awards. Up to 100 boys, aged 12 and under, attended the course, which will culminate in a series of matches against boys from Leeds at Arena 84 next Monday evening. 29th June 1987.16 of 22Rawthorpe Brownies' first Brown Owl of 30 years ago Mrs Madelaine Lofthouse cuts the 30th birthday cake at celebrations in Rawthorpe Church Hall. Mrs Lofthouse was one of two former Brown Owls attending the birthday celebrations - the other being Mrs Pat Graham. Today's Brown Owl is Mrs Lorraine Sykes. Some 24 members of the 63rd Rawthorpe Brownies enjoyed games, a buffet and camp fire songs to celebrate their 30 years. A new member, Sarah Dulay, was enrolled and other guests included guiders and guide captains. 27th June 1987.17 of 22On the button... parents have raised £100 with a variety of events to provide a computer keyboard for youngsters at Golcar Junior and Infant School. Mrs Valerie Wright, parents' association treasurer, is seen with the cheque and some of the children who will use the Concept keyboard with the school's BBC Micro computer. 1st July 1987.18 of 22A cycle list for the cyclist as Assistant District Commissioner (Scouts) Mr Jim Hunter (right) prepares the Huddersfield South West district scouts for their riders' badges. Some 21 boys from troops through the South West were at Crosland Moor Scout Headquarters to take their badge, which includes having their bicycles in a roadworthy condition, knowing how to mend a puncture, answering questions on the Highway Code and completing a circular cycling route. 23rd June 1987.19 of 22Going Dutch - that is a cassette made by youngsters at St John's C of E School, Golcar. The children have made a recording about their village to be sent to friends at their 'twin' school in Voorburg, Holland. The tape is being made with the help of Mr Trevor Wood, a Batley teacher who has been seconded to Radio Leeds as part of a scheme run by the local authority. The recording will feature interviews with local people including the Vicar of Golcar, the Rev Andrew Martlew, and Kirklees public relations officer Mr Norman Daley. The tape will be ready by next month and the school is hoping to receive a similar gift Ð as long as it is recorded in English. 29th June 1987.20 of 22Pictured at their cake stall are these Thurstonland youngsters who have raised £100 for the Bodyscanner Appeal. Nursing officer Mrs Brenda Gould (left) receives this £220 cheque from committee member Mrs Denise Winpenny and other members of Brockholes Mothers' and Toddlers' group. The money was raised by the children with a sponsored obstacle course and has been given to the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary's Special Care Baby Unit. The toddlers will be rewarded for their efforts this week a day trip to Templenewsam house and park near Leeds. 26th June 1987.22 of 22
