This English major with strong Huddersfield connections was captured by the Germans shortly after winning the Victoria Cross in one of the bravest actions of the First World War.

But just days later Major Charles Allix Lavington Yate was dead and it remains a mystery whether he was murdered while trying to escape his captors or took his own life.

The Major was married to Almondbury-born Florence Helena Brigg — daughter of a former Huddersfield mayor — and today is the first time his story has been featured in the Examiner.

In this special Remembrance supplement to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One and the November 11 commemorations we also profile the amazing historical research work done into Huddersfield people both on the frontline and back here at home.

One book, Huddersfield’s Roll Of Honour 1914-1922, was published on Monday and the second, Huddersfield in World War One, will be out soon.
