It was certainly quite a large class at Kirkburton Secondary Modern School in 1962.

This photograph was submitted by Dave Lydall from Brockholes but he’s struggling with many of the names.

Some he knows and they are Roger Heywood (back row, third from left), Mick Senior (second from back row, left), Brian Thornton (third row, third left), Michael Lockwood (third row, third from right) and front row head boy Paul Chapman (fourth left) and form teacher Ken Rothery (fifth left).

And the reason is that he left Kirkburton when he was 12 and moved to Holmfirth Secondary Modern.

He said: “I remember some of the boys but unfortunately can’t name any of the girls. I certainly remember Mr Rothery who is now very well known in music circles. He was a great bloke at school.”

Ken was head of music at Kirkburton Secondary Modern School, sang with Huddersfield Choral Society for 55 years and was awarded life membership.

He was choirmaster at Parkwood Methodist Church and Longwood Methodist Church and was musical director of Honley Gilbert and Sullivan Society for 25 years.

Ken also conducted Holmfirth Choral Society and was the first conductor of Huddersfield Choral Society Youth Choir.

Dave was a park supervisor for more than 20 years, mainly at Beaumont Park and says the Friends of Beaumont Park have done a magnificent job revamping it and keeping it well maintained.

Now 63 he’s retired. Dave and his wife, Lesley, have their family exceptionally close to them.

The couple live near Brockholes Junior School and their two children, Matthew and Sarah, both live within 500 yards of them with their families.

The couple have five grandchildren – Danny, Leila-May, Sophia, Charlie and Vinny.

“We see them all the time which is wonderful,” said Dave.
