THE United Nations declared 1985 International Youth Year. All Our Yesterdays is happy to dedicate this week’s selection of photographs, all taken in October, 1985, to Huddersfield’s young people.

Most of the youngsters featured in these pages will be in their thirties and forties now, many with their own children. Hopefully they will look back on 1985 as a happy time.

Then, as now, young people were making music, signing up for sponsored walks, getting involved in recycling projects, learning about different cultures, and of course, at this time of year, taking part in harvest festivals.

They were, if anything, keener on games and fitness than the children of 2011 – our selection today shows youngsters taking awards in swimming and dancing.

In the big wide world, this was an interesting month in the development of computers, which of course was in its infancy. The Free Software Foundation was founded in Massachusetts, USA – a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the freedom to create, distribute and modify computer software.

The Nintendo Entertainment System brought out the first Super Mario Brothers game, just a week or two before Microsoft launched Windows 1.0, with its now indispensable drop-down menus, scroll bars, icons, and dialogue boxes.
