WHILE there is never a time when I don’t want the England cricket team to do well in a tournament – I don’t think I have ever wanted the team to show their winning capabilities quite so much as over the next couple of weeks.

I still regard the World Twenty20 contest as perhaps the most trivial of international cricket prizes, but England are the holders and you always want your team to win.

However, this time it has more to do with the manner in which the talents of those representing us in Sri Lanka have been belittled because of the furore over a temperamental waste of time who I refuse to name (but you know who I mean).

The side England are sending out there are well capable of coming back with the trophy.

I would be happier if our captain looked as though he needed to shave – like policemen England captains are now looking frighteningly young to me – but Stuart Broad has shown himself to be smart enough to conjure up some winning cricket from his side.

And if the likes of Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow can find their niche then maybe we will never even have to think about selecting ‘the one who shall not be named’ for any England team ever again!
