Anyone for tennis? This week’s featured property was built in 1926 on the site of the former tennis court belonging to the house next door.

Now it is a delightful mix of Edwardian-style architecture combined with a Mediterranean influence from owners Ian Whitwam and his Catalan-born wife Rosamaria, who originally comes from Barcelona.

The couple, who have lived in their home at Beaumont Park for 20 years, are now looking to head further south to be nearer their son who lives in Kent and their daughter who lives in the French city of Perpignan.

Ian said: “From here it is actually quicker for us to fly to Perpignan than it is to drive to Kent. We just want to be nearer to them both and to our grandchildren.’’

Named La Madriguera (The Warren), this house is a perfect example of a late Edwardian house. It fronts onto Beaumont Park and is one of the many imposing detached properties, which sit alongside Beaumont Park Road.

Walk into the light and airy entrance hall and you’ll see a house with large, spacious rooms including a good sized dining kitchen, which continues through into a rear porch and overlooks the garden. There is a downstairs lavatory, a pleasant sitting room with original fireplace and a dining room with original fireplace and wooden floor, which leads into a large conservatory that is used as the main lounge and which looks onto the front garden.

Upstairs the house has three bedrooms, two doubles and a single with a skylight. The large master bedroom has fitted wardrobes, a picture rail and an en-suite shower room with larger-than-average shower cubicle.

The Catalan feel can be seen particularly in the bathroom and en-suite with the couple’s choice of Mediterranean style flooring.

Rosamaria said: “We are only the second owners of this property and love the original features like the fireplaces and tall windows. The beauty of this house is that it has retained its original features and we have tried very hard to keep that feel by installing hardwood windows. When we moved here, the kitchen in particular was very basic and we have modernised it throughout but been mindful of its elegant Edwardian feel.’’

Outside at the front, the house has a lawned area, gravel pathway and colourful rhododendron bushes. Vehicular access is via the rear entrance which has wrought iron gates into a driveway, which can provide parking for up to five cars, along with a double garage.

Living across the road from Beaumont Park has been a constant delight for the couple over the years who have involved themselves in park events and the restoration of the popular Victorian park.

Rosamaria said: “These days there are events all year round in the park and it is a delight to live so near to such a lovely park. We often enjoy a walk in Beaumont Park and today it is such a popular place for families to spend time together.’’

This is a charming family detached home in a perfect location, ideal for access to one of Huddersfield’s favourite parks, local schools and with easy access into Huddersfield town centre either by car or bus.

Take a look at this house for yourself at an open viewing which has been organised for this Saturday, June 7, from 11am – 5pm.
