This wonderful stone-built detached home in Golcar has been painstakingly converted from a barn and extended by Sue Birkenshaw and her husband.

Situated in a semi-rural spot, Moorside Barn, Clough Head, enjoys three large bedrooms, a galleried landing with exposed beams and a stunning kitchen.

Seventy years ago the building was used by a farmer for his cows and also hosted local boxing matches!

It now boasts a stylish interior, painstakingly designed by Sue, who oversaw the project.

There are few homes in the area which can boast such panoramic views, and the Birkenshaws have taken meticulous care to make the most of the area’s natural beauty.

The couple purchased the home a little over six years ago, when an accident left Sue out of work for three months, and itching to find herself a new activity.

The conversion was a big project and Sue says: “My husband thought I was mad!”

It took three years to complete the conversion, as the Birkenshaws were fastidious in their choice of tradesmen, wanting to make sure they had the best men for the job and that all work was carried out to the highest possible standard.

Sue oversaw the project from beginning to end and picked every aspect of the interiors herself, choosing tiles in her lunch hour and picking paints over breakfast.

Now that the home is completed, the couple have enjoyed relaxing and savouring all that the local area has to offer, including the nearby farm shop, popular walking routes, and local pubs, often taking a short stroll on summer evenings into the heart of the village.

“I do love this house, and the walks around the area are fabulous.

“It’s exactly how I wanted it and the local tradesmen we found were absolutely fantastic,” says Sue.

The farmhouse kitchen has become Sue’s favourite room in the home since she retired, and it’s easy to see why. With exposed ceiling beams, a free-standing range cooker, and plenty of integrated appliances, this is where she’ll often be found baking, cooking, and trying out new recipes.

So, why the move? The answer is quite intriguing.

“We want more land to start keeping alpacas,’’ said Sue.

Alpacas are a domesticated species of South American camelid, resembling a small llama.

“I’m ready again to take on another project, I’m getting a bit bored now I’m retired!” added Sue.

The local infant school, which boasts small class sizes, is just across the road, making this an excellent spot for a family with young children.

The M62 motorway is within easy reach, offering excellent commuter links, but you would never guess this when stood in the landscaped gardens – the work of Mr Birkenshaw – and soak up the views of the rolling hills of Colne Valley.

Offering a perfect balance of rural life and contemporary comforts, this home is a true testament to the hard work put into it by the Birkenshaw family and is sure to make a happy home for many years to come.
