WITH the Olympics in full swing we thought we’d turn our attention to sport for a couple of weeks and this is the first collection of photographs that appeared in the Examiner 21 years ago.

Nationally, it was a quiet year in sport with no Olympics or major football championships.

It was a good year for German tennis, though, with Michael Stich winning the Wimbledon title, Steffi Graf lifting the women’s championship and Boris Becker triumphing in the Australian Open.

John Parrott beat Jimmy White 18-11 to win the World Snooker Championship but Stephen Hendry remained at number one.

Australia won the Rugby World Cup and Wigan retained their title in the English Rugby League competition with Oldham, Sheffield Eagles and Rochdale Hornets all relegated.

Closer to home the rugby players were being put through their paces in a different way. Huddersfield Rugby League club coaches Fran Jarvis and Mick Blacker took the day off and left the job to aerobics teacher Margaret Doyle – the first of several such sessions for the players at Fartown High School.
