TODAY’S All Our Yesterdays has a sporting theme.

This summer promises to be one of great excitement with England qualifying for next month’s Euro Championships in Poland and the Ukraine and then the London Olympics from July 27 to August 12.

Back in 1986 the World Cup was held in Mexico and who can forget the infamous Hand Of God when Maradona used his hand to beat Peter Shilton in the air to guide the ball into the back of the net and defeat England 2-1 in the quarter finals.

Argentina then went on to beat Germany 3-2 in the final.

It was also the year that Alex Ferguson was appointed Manchester United’s new manager and is still in the post.

Snooker provided one of the shocks of the year with virtual unknown Joe Johnson beating Steve Davis 18-12 to lift the world title while Boris Becker and Martina Navratilova won the Wimbledon singles titles.

In the following pages we look at success across a huge range of amateur sports in Huddersfield from football, rugby and cricket to snooker, squash and tennis.

But we start here with Sharon Dobson who became the first Scissett Karate Club member to gain a 1st Dan black belt and is pictured training with instructor John Adair.
