LADIES’ Rugby League was pioneered in Huddersfield by the town’s rugby league Supporters’ Club a few years before this picture in April 1985.

But in this game Sea Ossa’s beat the John Collier Thunderbirds from Bradford in their first match at Arena 84.

Arena 84 was a new name for the Huddersfield rugby league club’s then home off Spaines Road, Fartown, as part of a revival attempt for the club which also saw them adopting the name Barracudas. Both names were dropped at the end of the 1988-9 season. The Giants name did not arrive until 1996.

The women’s game is still going strong and Kirklees will host games in the Women’s World Cup Festival this July in Dewsbury and Batley.
