He made his name over the years in boxing.

But now Huddersfield coach Mark Reynolds has tasted sporting success in another field.

The Rawthorpe Amateur Boxing Club coach has just won his first trophy on the golf course – four months after joining the Bradley Park club in Huddersfield.

And, ironically, he shared the podium at the Cambridge charity event with two other big hitters.

Mark was taking part in the first Alzheimer’s Research UK Golf competition which was organised by former British, Commonwealth and European boxing champion Dave “Boy” Green.

Dave finished third while second place went to former world welterweight champion John H Stracey.

“It was pure chance that the three prizes went to ex boxers, as it was open to all,” said Mark.

“Dave had organised the tournament on his home course, Lakeside, in Cambridge, and he talked me round.

“I was delighted to win, especially as it was for such a good cause.

“I help care for a relative who has Alzheimer’s and it was a very emotional day.

“There were so many like-minded people there sharing common stories and getting help and advice.

“I have done research into the care of Alzheimer’s and it is frightening. One in three people are going to get the disease, yet the funding is very small.

“I hope the tournament raises a good deal and I plan to host the second competition next year here in Huddersfield.”

Mark, who has played golf for about four years, plays off a handicap of 23.

But his conversion to a new sport has not come without problems.

“I boxed for years and always managed to hold on to my good looks!

“Then I went out playing golf the other week, managed to wrap a club around a tree and was smashed in the face by the club head.

“It smashed three teeth and left me with a great big cut on my face.

“I finished the round and then went off to the Infirmary, only to be sent to Bradford Royal Infirmary to have plastic surgery.”
