A TRAINING company which started in a house in the Holme Valley has won a regional business award.
ASTRA Access Safety Training was set up three years ago by director Mick Aston in his spare room at home in Honley with the help of a £2,000 grant.
The company specialises in delivering training that is legally required for people working at heights in areas like construction, telecommunications and signage.
“I’ve always been ambitious and after 35 years working in the scaffolding industry I decided that I could do it on my own so I so set-up as a sole trader,” said Mr Aston.
The company moved to bigger premises at Wakefield – while Mr Aston also formed a partnership with fellow director Mandy Netherwood, who provided a much-needed range of administration skills to the company.
Now ASTRA employs six people and has just opened up two new training centres with plans for another in this year. The company has also started to sell access and personal safety equipment.
The firm was named Business of the Month by Huddersfield law firm Eaton Smith, which runs the award in association with the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce.
