A NURSERY firm based in Huddersfield has almost doubled sales of its maternity fashions range.
Mamas & Papas said the 46% like-for-like increase – against the same trading spring and summer season in 2007 – highlighted how the company was bucking the retail trend as the economic downturn hit most fashion retailers.
Karen Tyler, director of fashion at the Colne Bridge company, said: “We have worked hard to set a benchmark that means we never lose sight of our vision or dilute our values. This consistently translates into offering our customer what she truly needs during that period of her life.
“The choice and the ‘stretch’ of the brand is unbeatable. Therefore, we offer a fashion proposition with a boutique feel and presentation.
“The choice is growing with each season and we have pushed product development, innovation and in-store space management, visual merchandising, customer service and our online offering to meet current demand, but grow in line with our long-term plans.”
She added: “There is a buzz within the business that is rarely seen in other retailers. There is a passion and drive that offers support to deliver results and the founders, David and Luisa Scacchetti, are highly visible throughout all processes.
“Their passion for the brand is endless and the pressures we as a team put upon ourselves to succeed season after season are generated by a true desire to make our brand the number one destination for all newly-pregnant women.”
Mamas & Papas has increased its clothing teams with the arrival of Sharon Fox to head the design, buying and technical division of the maternity fashion division and Caroline Smith, who will lead the baby wear development teams.
Mamas & Papas now has eight international stores in the Middle East as well as a retailing presence in the Far East, Australia, North America and Europe. It has more than 30 UK stores, including ones at Birstall, York, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol, Sheffield and London.
