CAR parts and engineering firm GKN returned to profit as its automotive arm benefited from a recovery in the global car market.

Its Driveline business, which makes driveshafts for almost half of new cars, lifted sales by 35% amid strong demand in China, India and North America. Pre-tax profits totalled £345m in 2010 against losses of £54m a year ago.
