AN £8.3 million package of support was announced tonight aimed at helping workers losing their jobs as a result of the mothballing of a giant steel plant.

UK Steel Enterprise, the economic regeneration arm of steel firm Corus, said the money will help new and growing businesses in the North of England in the wake of the loss of jobs at Redcar.

An innovation centre in Hartlepool will be expanded, a new regeneration fund launched and local projects will be backed financially.

“The principal focus of this major new support package is to help the recovery from the mothballing of Teesside Cast Products,” said UK Steel Enterprise regional manager Simon Hamilton. “We are very aware of the effects of this closure on Teesside.”
