TELECOMS giant BT has pledged to create about 20 jobs in Huddersfield following its £20m takeover of an online directories firm.

BT has bought Ufindus Ltd, one of the UK’s leading online business directories, from Iomart Group plc.

Ufindus has a sales office employing 30 people at Pennine Business Park, Bradley. BT said it planned to recruit another 20 staff at Bradley over the next 12 months.

The new acquisition will bolster BT Directories, the telecom company’s own classified advertising and directories business.

Ufindus, which has about 300 employees in total, has more than 20,000 small and medium-sized business customers across the UK and 1.9m online directory listings.

It provides customers with an online presence via its three general search directories – SmileLocal, MoreUK and Ufindus – and more than 100 niche directories focused on individual trades such as builderregister.com and bathroomspecialistfinder.com.

As part of an overall online package, customers can also choose to have a website designed by Ufindus. In total, its directories generate more than 9m searches a month.

The company, formed in 2001, is based in Lancaster with sales offices in Huddersfield, Chorley, Blackpool and Barrow.
