A HOUSEBUILDER working in Huddersfield has won a top industry award for health and safety.

Cala Group Ltd, which includes Cala Homes (Yorkshire) developing 213 homes at the former Hopkisons Valves site in Birkby, won the award for best housebuilder’s safety programme at the Construction Health And Safety Awards 2008.

The developer took the top prize for its Above and Beyond Campaign, a series of initiatives developed by the company to reduce accidents .

The initiatives included providing temporary scaffolding staircases to remove the need for ladders; installing cameras on forklifts to improve rear vision for drivers; improving hygiene on site by providing barrier creams, hand wash creams and sun blocks; and reduced working at height by building roofs on the ground and then lifting them into position by crane.

Darren Howell, managing director of Cala Homes (Yorkshire), said: “I am delighted that our focus on health and safety initiatives has been recognised. Praise is due not just to our health and safety managers who devised and implemented the scheme, but to all our workforce and sub-contractors.”

As well as the Hexagon development at Birkby, Cala Homes (Yorkshire) is also building housing schemes in Penistone, York and Kippax, near Leeds.
