BUOYANT Easter trading provided some respite from tough high street trading conditions for chocolates retailer Thorntons.

Chief executive Jonathan Hart said seasonal lines sold well, but added that demand for all-year round products in supermarkets remained constrained.

The retailer, which has a store at the Piazza Shopping Centre in Huddersfield, said overall sales were flat in the 16 weeks to April 28 as a successful Easter period helped reduce the decline in same-store sales to 1.6% from 4.2% in the previous quarter. Sales through supermarkets and other retailers fell by 0.9%.
