THE Co-op has become the first retailer in the UK to put all its own-brand fizzy drinks and mixers in recycled plastic bottles.

The group, which has stores across the Huddersfield area, said the move to 100% recycled PET bottles would reduce CO2 emissions by 1,212 tonnes and save 808 tonnes of new plastic from being made every year.

PET bottles are made from recycled plastic – polyethylene terephthalate.

The Manchester-based Co-op said that using recycled PET instead of new plastic would save one-and-a-half tonnes of CO2 for every tonne of plastics used.

Debbie Robinson, director food retail marketing, said: “ We are delighted to be the first major retailer to roll out 100% recycled PET bottles across our carbonated drinks and mixers.”
