A BOGUS charity collector has been trying to con Huddersfield businesses out of cash.

Now one potential victim who thwarted her has spoken out to warn others.

And the charity the woman claimed to be helping, Cancer Research UK, said it has received several calls about her.

It comes just days after the Examiner revealed that a man had been conning money from elderly people in Brighouse.

He tells them sob stories - including that his wife died from cancer.

The woman called at several businesses on Leeds Road.

But a staff member at one became suspicious and started to ask her basic questions about the charity event the woman claimed to be doing.

When she couldn't answer them the woman left - but was seen to go into other businesses.

The woman who thwarted her said: "She claimed to be doing a sponsored walk for Cancer Research UK from Huddersfield to Harrogate. But she could not even tell me where she was setting off from.

"She did not have any identification, a letter from the charity or a sponsorship form. All she had was a scruffy piece of paper which she would not let me see."

The woman is white, with a pale complexion. She is in her mid-20s and 5ft 7in, with long brown hair in a centre parting style.

She wore a black denim jacket, a black T-shirt and black denim jeans with a motif on the pocket.

Businesses on Leeds Road have joined together to form an anti-crime scheme and the victim instantly emailed other businesses.

Det Con Russ Conlon, of Kirklees CID, said people should always ask for proof that the person is raising money for the cause they claim to be helping.

"If you are in any doubt don't hand over any money," he said.

A Cancer Research UK spokes- woman said: "We have had several calls from people in the Huddersfield area about this woman.

"People should contact us first before embarking on fundraising. We can help them with advice and provide them with material such as sponsor forms and letters of authority."

The charity can be contacted on 0113 231 9828. Anyone who knows who the woman is, or if they saw her with anyone else or using a car, should ring 0800 555 111.
