A GOLFING equipment firm has swung into takeover action.

Huddersfield-based retailer Direct Golf UK Ltd has expanded its operations with the acquisition of Cambridge Golf & Conference Centre for an undisclosed sum.

The centre, based near Huntingdon, has a driving range facility and a well-stocked golf shop as well as a restaurant and bar, and conference facilities for up to 200 delegates.

John Andrew, owner of Direct Golf, said “I am delighted to add to our existing retail outlets across the country.

“Our expertise is mainly in running golf shops and driving ranges – and the restaurant and conference facilities provide interesting new opportunities at our new Cambridge site.”

John Wilson, of Huddersfield accountancy firm Revell Ward, who advised on the deal, said: “Direct Golf has an excellent track record of running successful retail operations and I am pleased to see them expand in this way.

“It’s great to see a Huddersfield business with the confidence to invest in its future.”

Legal advice was provided by Nick Metcalfe of Huddersfield law firm Baxter Caulfield.

Direct Golf, which has its registered office at Milnsbridge, has 17 retail sites across the country as well as an online operation.

The company was founded in 1991 by Mr Andrew, a PGA professional.

From one small shop in Huddersfield the company has grown into one of the largest specialist golf retailers in the UK and Europe.

It employs over 190 people and boasts a management team PGA professionals and golf “fanatics”.
