THIS true family firm has bucked the recession and gone from strength to strength over the last 18 months.

Newsholme Food Group began as a butcher’s which has grown to become a leading supplier of sausages and cooked meats to the UK retail sector.

And its founder, 85-year-old Trevor Newsholme, is still working in the business that has recently invested £5m, including the completion of a 50,000 sq ft extension to its site at New Hey Road, Oakes.

The company dates back to 1950 and sales director John Newsholme said: "The success is all down to teamwork and the bank, HSBC, for backing us.’’

His brother, joint managing director David, said: "Turnover will be £25m by the end if the year and we now employ 230 people.’’

He revealed the firm had taken over a struggling company in Chesterfield three weeks ago and it is already showing signs of recovery and growth.

The award judges said Newsholme Food Group was to be commended for its ambitious investment to expand the business and its success in developing brands to appeal to its many customers – as well as its efforts to create more jobs.

Also nominated in this category sponsored by Business Link Yorkshire were buy it Direct and Severn Unival.
