BUSINESS insolvencies fell in Yorkshire and across the UK last month, a national survey has revealed.

Figures from business information group Experian showed there were 124 insolvencies in Yorkshire during May against 169 in the same month last year.

Nationally, the figure dropped to 1,491 last month from 2,023 in May, 2009.

Experian said the improvement was largely due to a reduction in failures among the medium-sized firms – those employing 51 to 100 employees.

Sectors reporting the biggest improvements included construction, engineering, textiles and clothing, wholesale, non-food retailing, business services and property.

Survey spokesman Rolf Hickmann said: “The fall in the number of insolvencies is a good sign.”

Mr Hickman added that the fall showed that businesses were distinctly aware of the current environment and were taking vital steps to protect themselves from risks.
