LUXURY fashion firm Mulberry reported a 22% rise in annual profits after demand for its ranges exceeded expectations.

Demand for its new Alexa handbag, named after television presenter Alexa Chung, helped boost revenues by 23% to £72.1m as profits hit £5.1m in the year to March 31.

Bath-based Mulberry said sales growth would have been stronger if it had not sold out of a number of key lines.

The company, which sells some of its bags for £3,000 each, has 18 of its own stores in the UK, but also has goods in 300 shops overseas through franchises and concessions.
