BUSINESS leaders have been urged to join a new website to help protect themselves from inaccurate information online.
Huddersfield businessman Steve Wainwright has launched Profiled.com to help others in business counter any inaccurate personal information about them that may appear on the internet.
Mr Wainwright said his aim was to make the website “the definitive online resource for factually correct information about the UK’s most senior and high profile executives.”
Business leaders can present their professional CVs and achievements. The website also features a “contextual search engine” which searches the web for articles about members and notifies them of the results.
That allows them to monitor and – where necessary – correct what’s being said about them them as it happens.
“I see Profiled.com as essentially making order out of chaos,” said Mr Wainwright.
“We all use the internet to find information on new business contacts – but a lot of the information we get back via the popular search engines is either about someone else entirely or is wholly inaccurate.
“I wanted a place where I could take positive control of the information about me on the internet and our market research showed that other senior businesspeople felt the same.”
Mr Wainwright said: “Managing your reputation is vital in today’s demanding business environment.
“We spend years carefully building our reputations and our good name – yet many of us take no control of that reputation and leave it in the hands of others. On the web, your reputation is managed by search engines which can often provide a misleading representation of you, or even worse – no representation at all.”
Mr Wainwright plans to target the public relations and marketing industries as well as the commercial sector – at a time when the impact of the internet and the evolution of “social media” such as Facebook is becoming a key issue for companies and employees alike.
Members of Profiled.com get a personal page to store and update fair and accurate information about themselves.
They will be subject to an identity verification process to help prevent identity fraud and will benefit from thorough privacy control settings.
