TRAINS running on the East Coast Main line are the most punctual for 12 years, latest figures have revealed.

The percentage of trains arriving at their destination within 10 minutes of time reached 91.2% during the four weeks to Sunday, October 12 – the best performance in the route since rail privatisation in 1996.

The figures comes 10 months after National Express began operating the service, which links London and Scotland with connections to Huddersfield via Wakefield and Leeds.

National Express East Coast deputy managing director Susan Goldsmith said the improvement reflected improved reliability following a £45m investment to rebuild its fleet of 13 diesel high speed trains.

National Express East Coast runs 137 weekday services on the East Coast Main Line, linking London King's Cross, the East Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber, north-east England and Scotland. It carries more than 17.4m passengers a year.
