JOHN Lewis said its website recorded its busiest day ever on Monday – with orders worth £5.3m, up by 30% on the same day last year.

Total sales in the four days to Wednesday rose by 3.7%, with beauty items among popular buys as shoppers gear up for Christmas.

David Barford, director for selling operations, said: “Trade this week has continued its strong momentum with johnlewis.com breaking records.”

He said: “Shoppers are treating themselves as well as each other this week with party preparation products flying off the shelves.”

Beauty products, gift wrapping and novelty mugs were among the best sellers, he said.
