BUSINESSES working to support the community and reduce their impact on the environment have been urged to enter a new award.

The 2012 Kirklees Responsible Business Awards are free to enter and attend and are open to all businesses in Kirklees.

The new awards replace the Kirklees Green Business Awards and boast two sections – The Excellence in the Environment Awards and The Excellence in the Community Awards.

All businesses that enter will be invited to attend an awards ceremony on Thursday October 18, at Cathedral House in Huddersfield.

The evening will include music, food, networking and guest speakers and the winners will receive their official award as well as prize money towards further improvements.

Businesses can enter at www.batleyanddewsbury.co.uk

The Excellence in the Environment Awards cover areas including waste reduction, renewable energy, reducing electrical use, reducing water consumption, heat saving, pollution prevention and sustainable purchasing.

The Excellence in the Community Awards cover categories including supporting charity, volunteering in the community, engaging with local schools and initiating a socially responsible community project.

Kirklees Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan (pictured), above), said: “It’s great to see so many businesses improving their green credentials, whether it’s increasing recycling or reducing the waste and pollution that their business generates. We’re extremely supportive of their efforts and hope that they continue to strive for sustainability.

““We are proud of our green credentials here in Kirklees and I hope that other businesses are inspired by the efforts of their peers and that we see a large number of entries at this year’s awards.”
