BUILDING products group Marshalls has become the first in its sector to achieve a standard set by the United Nations.

The Birkby-based business, which supplies stone for patios, footpaths and drives, has been accepted into the United Nations Global Compact.

Members of the UN Global Compact must show a commitment to 10 principles in the area of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

Marshalls was accepted after a rigorous application process, in which the company had to outline its commitment to sustainability, human rights and education.

It now becomes one of only 165 UK companies to belong to the UN Global Compact.

Marshalls, commitment to sustainability includes improving the environmental performance of its plants and vehicles, encouraging recycling and safeguarding the interests of suppliers, including workers at quarries in India.
