Paving stone supplier Marshalls plc has put its Huddersfield headquarters up for sale with a £1.3m price tag – and a prospective buyer is all ready to move in.

The award-winning stock market listed company is selling its impressive property at Birkby and relocating its 26 head office staff to its registered office, Landscape House, at Premier Way on Lowfields Business Park in Elland.

Birkby Grange, a former gentleman’s residence dating from the mid-1800s, is being marketed by commercial property agent Walker Singleton.

Paul Andrew, of Walker Singleton’s Huddersfield office, said the property had attracted keen interest and was now under offer with a date set for completion in May. He said he was unable to give details of the buyer at this stage.

Birkby Grange is one of Huddersfield’s hidden gems.

Along with the principal building, the Grade II listed stone-built property includes a barn and stables which have been converted to form offices premises in a series of one, two and part-three storey buildings. The property was first converted to office use in the 1980s.

Birkby Grange provides more than 11,800sq ft of accommodation, including general and private offices together with presentation, meeting and training rooms, a canteen and a kitchen. It stands in two-and-a-half acres of landscaped grounds, which also includes car parking and a sweeping driveway.

Birkby Grange is being marketed for potential residential or commercial use.

In its brochure advertising the premises, Walker Singleton said: “We consider that the property may be suitable for redevelopment subject to the necessary planning and Listed Building consents. The adopted Unitary Development Plan for the Kirklees Metropolitan area indicates the property is unallocated for any specific use, although it is situated within a conservation area.”

In a brief statement, a spokesperson for Marshalls said: “I can confirm that all of the Marshalls employees currently located at Birkby Grange are in the process of moving to Landscape House in Elland.

“The reason for the move is that it makes sense for the employees from the two buildings to be located in the same place.”

Marshalls is a leading supplier of paving stone for patios, driveways and major construction schemes. It has supplied paving for prestigious projects, including Trafalgar Square, Gibraltar airport and the London 2012 Olympics Village.
