MAJOR manufacturers in Kirklees will share the secrets of their success at a regional conference this autumn.

The Manufacturing Advisory Service in Yorkshire and Humber will hold its 2010 Manufacturing Conference – A New Era for Manufacturing – on Thursday, October 14, at the Advanced Manufacturing Park Technology Centre in Rotherham.

Speakers will include figures from Lockwood-based David Brown Gear Systems and textile firm Camira Fabrics, which has operations at Meltham and Mirfield.

The event is set to be an action packed day of learning, best practice and networking for the region’s manufacturers – with a specific focus on helping firms develop their strategic direction, capitalise on “low carbon” opportunities and push forward with innovative and advanced manufacturing techniques.

Delegates will also be able to pick up practical tips and advice from respected local business leaders on improving the competitiveness of their business.

Last year’s event attracted more than 250 local manufacturers from across the region.

MAS Y&H is jointly supported by Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional Development Fund.

It is managed and delivered by YFM Business Development, part of the GLE Group – a not for profit enterprise development company.

Robin Watson, regional director of MAS, will be chairing the conference. Simon Hill, executive director of business at Yorkshire Forward, will also address the event.

Steve Watson, managing director of global aftermarket services at David Brown Gear Systems, will explain how the firm has transformed its “traditional” business model and learnt valuable lessons on becoming a major player in the renewable energy supply chain.

Cheryl Kindness, design and development director of multi-award winning Camira Fabrics, will also speak about the company’s success in developing “green” products.

Other speakers will include Richard Shacklady, chairman of Sheffield-based Pressure Technologies; and Peter Hopton, chief executive of Sheffield-based energy efficient computer manufacturers Very PC.

Robin Watson said: “The last two years have been a turbulent time for manufacturers, but we now have the chance to create a new era for manufacturing.”
