BUDGET fashion and home ware chain Matalan shrugged off consumer concerns to post a 30% leap in earnings.
The retailer said it was pledged to continue an ambitious store opening programme, which could see 100 more out-of-town stores opened in coming years.
Matalan posted underlying operating profits of £132.9m in the year to February 27.
Like-for-like sales rose by 6.7% – a slowdown on the previous year’s growth, but resilient compared with many of its high street rivals as hard-up consumers turn to discount stores to save money.
Matalan, which has three overseas franchise stores, plans to open between six and nine stores in the UK this year and up to 15 next year. It is also driving up online sales.
