HUDDERSFIELD firms were given a few political pointers recently.

A leading backbench MP explained how firms could improve their lobbying skills at a meeting organised for local manufacturers by Huddersfield-based industry support group Yorkshire Chemical Focus.

Harrogate Lib-Dem MP Phil Willis, who is chairman of the Commons Innovation, Universities and Skills Select Committee, was the guest speaker at the seminar, which was entitled Making Your Voice Heard.

It took place at the YCF offices at Syngenta, Leeds Road, Deighton.

Fiona Ferguson, Government relations manager for the Chemical Industries Association, also spoke at the event.

YCF chief executive Dr Jane Mockford said: “All industries – particularly those of us in the chemical sector – understand the need for regulation and legislation.

“However, it’s very frustrating when decisions are made at Parliamentary level if we feel we haven’t had the opportunity to put our point across.

“We’re delighted that such a high-profile MP, who has a real interest and involvement in this sector, took the time to explain how every business can make their voice heard in Westminster.”

Jim Farmery, head of innovation for development agency Yorkshire Forward, said: “Working in partnership is key to the success of the chemical industry in Yorkshire and Humber, be it between businesses, public sector bodies, the communities they all serve or with Government in national legislation and policy.

“Understanding how to form these partnerships and make them mutually beneficial through events such as this is vital.

“We welcomed Phil Willis giving such a practical demonstration of how our businesses can voice their views and experiences to Westminster.”

YCF was formed with money from Yorkshire Forward and the European Union to support and promote Yorkshire’s £2.2bn chemical sector.

It helps member firms to get access to public sector cash, brokering buying arrangements and helping members meet the requirements of new legislation.
